WHAT IS OAK CLADDING?
Oak is a highly durable yellow-brown wood with a distinctive grain, suited for both those with contemporary and traditional tastes. It is a premium construction material sourced from European oak trees. Due to its many attractive features, this timber has been a traditional and popular cladding material for centuries. It is a great choice for when you are looking for a durable wood with a distinct yellow-brown colour and grain to add to your home or business.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EUROPEAN OAK CLADDING?
- Fire resistance: European oak has inherent fire-resistant properties, providing an added level of safety in case of a fire incident. While no wood is entirely fireproof, oak cladding can offer improved fire resistance compared to some other materials.
- Durability: Oak is naturally extremely durable and long-lasting due to its tight grain and high density. This makes it a great choice for both interior and exterior applications where durability is important. Furthermore, the natural oils in the wood make it resistant to insect attacks and rotting when exposed to wet weather conditions such as rain or snow. Oak also has excellent dimensional stability which means that the wood will not expand or contract with changing temperatures or humidity levels. These features make it a great choice for Timber cladding projects that require minimal maintenance over time.
- Sustainability: Sourced responsibly from European forests, European oak is renewable and biodegradable and has a lower carbon footprint than some other materials.
- Versatility: Oak cladding is excellent for both interior and exterior uses. It can be installed vertically or horizontally. At Timber Ireland, you can choose from different profiles, such as tongue and groove or half-lap.

IS EUROPEAN OAK RED OR WHITE?
European oak is a yellow-brown wood, making it distinct from both red and white oaks. The unique hue of European oak can be attributed to its high tannin content and the grain pattern of its growth rings. When freshly cut, the wood has a honey-brown colour with a characteristic and stylish pattern of dark and light strips. Over time, the timber can develop a more golden patina as it is exposed to air and sunlight and ultimately fades to a silver/grey patina. If desired, this silver hue can be prevented with oiling.
REQUIRES LOW MAINTENANCE
Made from resilient European oak, the cladding is highly durable and can withstand the elements for many years. Nevertheless, to ensure your cladding lasts even longer while looking great, it’s essential to treat it regularly with preservative or finishing oil. Doing so provides an additional layer of protection against water damage, insect infestations, and more.
